FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Ghost Gunner.

What is Ghost Gunner?
GG is a manufacturing concern managed by Defense Distributed.
How much does Ghost Gunner cost?
The total cost of the machine is $2,500 before shipping is applied. We now offer a layaway option. Please contact us at [email protected] for more details.
What materials can the GG3-S cut?
Ghost Gunner can cut all grades of aluminum and several grades of steel, including low carbon (1008, A36), medium carbon (1018, 1045), and stainless steel (303, 304, 316). It can also engrave titanium, brass, and other non-ferrous metals.
What is included with my Ghost Gunner?
Ghost Gunner CNC, 6' USB A-B cable, 6' NEMA 5-15/IEC C13 three prong power cable, DD USB drive, 17mm combination wrench, allen key set, 2 tubes of machine oil, and the GG3 Operators Manual.
What else do I need to buy for the machine to work?
Just plug Ghost Gunner into your computer, install our software and use any compatible .dd design file to start your CNC project.
What end mills does Ghost Gunner use?
Ghost Gunner uses industry standard ER-11 collets. Changing end mills is a simple process and full instructions are included.
Which 80% receivers does Ghost Gunner use?
GG3 can machine any mil-spec AR-15 or DPMS 308 lower receiver with a pre-milled rear take down well. Our jigs and fixtures support a wide range of receiver types.
How is the work piece held on the table?
Injection-molded jigs are used to hold the part in place as each milling step is performed. For example, an AR-15 lower is held in a left-hand jig while the fire control pocket is milled, then transferred to a right-hand jig for the remaining operations.
Can Ghost Gunner do engraving?
Yes, GG can be programmed to engrave with popular softwares. For GG-compatible engraving services we recommend DEFCAD.
Can I write my own code for Ghost Gunner?
Yes you can! Ghost Gunner runs standard G-Code via an onboard grbl interpreter. You can use software like Fusion 360 to generate toolpaths and export G-Code for Ghost Gunner.
How fast can the machine run?
When cutting aluminum, there's little reason to cut as fast as possible. Ghost Gunner prioritizes accuracy and finish quality over speed. A typical AR-15 lower takes about 1 hour to complete.
How does GG3-S power or rigidity compare to other CNC machines?
GG3-S is not as powerful or rigid as a half-ton knee mill or a six-figure Haas, but it is the most rigid and capable desktop CNC in its class. The machine is built from aluminum unibodies inside a plasma-cut A36 steel enclosure.
Do I need a special power supply?
No. Ghost Gunner uses a standard IEC power cord and is compatible with any 110/220V circuit. No external compressor or coolant system is required.
How do I connect to Ghost Gunner?
Ghost Gunner has two ports: Power (IEC standard) and USB (Type 'B').
What sort of maintenance is required for Ghost Gunner?
Ghost Gunner's moving parts are entirely sealed from chip debris. All bearings are sealed and contain permanent lubricant. Simply oil the lead screws and linear rails periodically with the included machine oil.
What Open Source parts did Ghost Gunner design?
The entire machine is open source. For other open source designs, Ghost Gunner developed a custom spindle motor and VFD controller board. All source files are available on our Downloads page.
When does my order ship?
All machines are made to order. When placing your order, the GG3 Deposit page will indicate your shipping timeline.
Is manufacturing a firearm legal?
Under federal law, manufacturing firearms for purpose of sale and distribution without an FFL is prohibited. However, an individual may make a firearm for personal use without a license. Please check your state and local laws.
Is Ghost Gunner legal in California?
Ghost Gunner CNC machines are general purpose machines classified by the US Department of Commerce. Ghost Gunner hardware and software is not currently available to residents of California who do not possess a federal firearms license.
